About Elbow Injections

An elbow injection can be used to treat various elbow-related conditions. These injections are often used to target chronic pain and discomfort associated with lateral epicondyle issues, offering relief and promoting healing in the affected elbow joint.

Elbow injections are sometimes performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement and optimal therapeutic effects. While they can provide significant relief for many patients, it’s essential to discuss potential risks and benefits with a qualified healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment approach based on individual needs and preferences.

Types of Elbow Joint Injections

There are several different types of injections that can be used to treat elbow conditions. The most effective injection will depend on your condition and its severity. At Georgia Hand, Shoulder & Elbow, we offer the following injections for the elbow:

  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Platelet-rich plasma injections
  • Hyaluronic acid injections
  • Tendon fenestration

Corticosteroid Injections

A corticosteroid injection uses cortisone to treat musculoskeletal conditions. These injections can be used to treat conditions affecting the muscles and tendons surrounding your elbow joint as well as the joint itself.

How Do Corticosteroid Injections Work?

Cortisone works by reducing inflammation at the injection site. The reduction in inflammation will also treat chronic pain. These injections do not contain any healing properties. However, they allow you to perform physical therapy, which should be part of your rehabilitation program.

Conditions Treated by Steroid Injections

Corticosteroid injections are used to treat conditions that cause pain and inflammation. These can include the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Medial epicondylitis (Golfer’s elbow)
  • Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
  • Olecranon bursitis
  • Joint synovitis
  • Osteoarthritis

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated form of platelets derived from the patient’s blood. These platelets play a crucial role in blood clotting and are utilized to accelerate healing in damaged tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones, and joints.

PRP Injection Procedure

PRP injections involve extracting a small amount of the patient’s blood, which is then processed in a centrifuge to isolate and concentrate the platelets. The concentrated platelets are mixed with a plasma base and injected directly into the injured area, often guided by ultrasound imaging for precision.

How Do PRP Injections Work?

Activated platelets in PRP release growth factors that stimulate the production of reparative cells, enhancing the body’s natural healing process.

Conditions Treated with PRP Injections

PRP injections are primarily used for soft tissue injuries. Studies have shown PRP injections to be effective in treating tendonitis, chronic tendinosis (e.g., tennis elbow), ligament injuries, and muscle injuries.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid injections (also known as viscosupplementation) are a synthesized substance that can be used to add lubrication to joints and tendons.

How Does Hyaluronic Acid Work?

Hyaluronic acid has lubricating characteristics that allow the tendon to glide more freely and reduce stickiness within the tendon. Hyaluronic acid can also reduce pain and lower inflammation.

Conditions Hyaluronic Acid Treats

Hyaluronic acid injections can be used to treat joint inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.

Tendon Fenestration

A tendon fenestration encourages inflammation to help kickstart the healing process.

How Does Tendon Fenestration Work?

During fenestration, your provider will repeatedly pass a needle through the damaged tendon tissue. The injury to the tendon will start localized bleeding and encourage a new cycle of healing to the tendon. New healthy tissue will start to grow in the tendon.

Conditions Treated with Tendon Fenestration

Tendon fenestration can be used to treat tendinopathy and wear and tear of the tendon.

Treatments Paired with Injection Therapy

In conjunction with injection therapy, patients may benefit from additional treatments to optimize results. These may include physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and lifestyle modifications.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in enhancing strength, flexibility, and mobility, complementing the effects of injection therapy by promoting long-term recovery and preventing the recurrence of symptoms.
